Artifact: ITEC 7480 Unit Plan
Reflection:
My artifact for standard 2.2 is the Onlline Learning experience unit plan created in ITEC 7480 (Introduction to Online Learning) and the accompanying unit plan checklist. Students designed a standards based unit of instruction which adhered to iNACOL's national standards for quality online courses. This particular module addresses three content standards and was created on wikispaces.com. It is one module of a six module unit that I created in the first course of my online teaching endorsement. I created other modules for this unit in subsequent courses required for my endorsement. The artifact includes both the wiki page as well as the checklist that candidates completed as they worked through the creation of the unit. In the checklist students describes how the iNACOL standards were met.
This artifact demonstrates how I incorporated numerous research-based teaching strategies. The teacher’s role at the onset of this project was to model and facilitate proper use of wikis because one of the main assignments within online learning unit was the Latin America Wiki Project. The student-centered, research-based strategies I incorporated in this project include active learning, collaborative learning, cooperative learning, project-based learning, and question-directed instruction. Much research has been done about student-centered learning. Findings suggest that these approaches to teaching improve student academic performance, student attitudes toward learning, and student persistence.
Learning needs that take into consideration the diversity of all students is accounted for through the consideration of different learning styles and multiple intelligences. Students have some choice in how they express their learning, and assignments are delivered in different modalities including visual and auditory. Also, the asynchrony of online learning allows students to work at their own pace, which is another means to address student diversity.
When I completed this artifact I chose Wikispaces as my learning platform. If I could go back and do this project over again I would choose my district’s learning management system to complete the project. Students in my district are already aware of the features of our school districts LMS. As it turned out, there was a somewhat steep learning curve with Wikispaces. Students, at least six graders, struggle initially learning how to navigate through all the features of Wikispaces.
The work that went into completing this artifact should benefit faculty development and student learning. I shared this online lesson with my fellow six grade social studies teachers on the teacher collaboration page in our districts learning management system. Even if teachers do not want to follow my lesson step-by-step, the resources embedded in the module will be useful for other similar content and grade level teachers. Also, students learned valuable collaboration and 21st-century skills through their acquisition of knowledge related to wiki spaces. Impact may be assessed based on student performance of the content standards addressed in the module.
