Artifact: Data Inventory
Reflection:
The artifact I chose for this standard is the Data Inventory I created in ITEC 7305 Data Analysis and School Improvement. The artifact is an inventory and analysis of all the data sources available at Lakeside Middle School. The inventory is categorized by assessment name, content area, students assessed, accessibility, and how the data is being used.
This artifact demonstrates mastery of the standard because it required me to model and facilitate the effective use of diagnostic, formative or summative assessments to assess student learning. These assessments allowed me to identify student performance levels, which could then use to inform instructional practice. As the inventory shows, the data used at my school includes the state criterion-referenced test, national tests, district-level benchmarks, interim assessments, a school wide writing test, the NAEP, ACCESS testing for ELL students, as well as common content area assessments. Suffice to say, we don't lack for data! How we use it, on the other hand, may be considered less than optimal. Also, the inventory reveals no assessments to measure technology literacy. Student technology literacy is addressed through classroom projects which included technology integration in assessment rubrics.
Through the course work completed in conjuncture with this artifact I learned the importance of using data wisely. This translates into using multiple measures and levels of data to ensure accurate observations and draw sound inferences. It also highlights the importance of building assessment literacy and appropriate strategies for interpreting data among the teachers in my building, a duty that I hope to fulfil one day as a data coach.
To impact school improvement I plan to share this artifact with my colleagues so that they may put to use the tools and resources available. I will also be a guide to share with them the process of collaborative inquiry and the importance of using data wisely.
