Artifact: Copyright and Fair Use in the Classroom
During ITEC 7445 I was tasked with researching copywrite issues in classrooms and select one or two specific mediums to evaluate as they apply to K12 education. The artifact I chose, a slideshow titled Copywrite and Fair Use in the Classroom, is the artifact I chose to illustrate my master of this standard.
The creation and delivery of this slide show to my colleagues serves as evidence of my ability to model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical use of digital information. Sometimes in is difficult to distinguish between "copywrite infringement and fair use" when it comes to using media materials in the classroom. Technology coaches need a full understanding of the laws, as well as the ability to communicate this information to faculty. The key element of this presentation is the section that addresses copywrite law as it applies to teachers. The "fair use" of digital materials has a more broad definition if the use of these materials is for educational purposes. In the presentation I discuss this “fair use” flexibility as it applies to teachers.
I also created a series of common scenarios based on personal observations from the schools I've worked in or visited. Teachers and coaches frequently encounter these situations during the course of their professional duties. I presented the information in a novel way in hopes of making the presentation more accessible and enjoyable to viewers.
Prior to the creation of this artifact, I had very little knowledge of copywrite laws and fair use doctrine. Practically everything I included in the presentation was new to me. If I were to redo this project, I would improve it by including statistical data about the prevalence of "innocent infringement" in public schools. I would Cidentify and evaluate the applicable court cases related to educational fair use. And I would detail the actual consequences faced by those individuals who have been prosecuted.
By sharing the information I learned with my colleagues I help ensure that teachers in my building do not violate copywrite laws. By sharing this presentation with our faculty through our school LMS, and by reminding our faculty during collaborative lesson planning I can impact school improvement. In this new digital world we live in, it is important that all teachers understand extent of the leeway granted to educations in terms of “fair use.” The impact of message can be measured by examining how our teachers are using the digital materials in the day to day lessons.
