Standard 3.7 – Chris Carlisle
The following are a list of artifacts that I will use for this standard: Screenshots of my Its Learning Page, a link to the Current Events Wiki Used in my Social Studies Class last year, and a link to a Winter Olympics wiki used in my literacy class last year. In the aggregate they demonstrate my mastery of standard 3.7.
The features of Its Learning, my district LMS allow teachers the ability to utilize digital communication and collaboration tools to communicate locally and globally with students, parents, and peers. The wikis allow these same levels, and also open up communication to the larger community.
My district is at the forefront of transitioning to a blended learning environment. We have access to powerful tools that support the communication and collaboration off teachers, students, parents and community stakeholders.
I chose to use screenshots from my Its Learning page because my district LMS is password protected. The wikis are available to view by anyone with a link. Only members can edit though. The Winter Olympics wiki shows evidence of collaboration among students in the completion of a project, and the Current Events wiki shows the use of the discussion board as a communication tool.
My abilities to use digital communication and collaboration tools has expanded exponentially with our new Learning Management System. In fact, I predict a push back from parents because there is so much two way communication that students will no longer have the ability to use the excuse that they lost their homework or they forgot to take home the assignment. Parents will have to become involved to hold their children responsible. Going forward, I will need to spend more time training the parents of my students the importance my district had put on digital learning and digital communication.
Digital communication has incredible potential to impact student learning. Barriers to access are becoming non-existent. Student learning is evolving from the traditional brick and mortar classroom to a learn anywhere anytime environment. For this transition to be as effective as possible, communication between all stakeholders is essential. Impact of this digital communication is evidenced already by my district's willingness to hold students responsible for unsubmitted assignments during inclement weather days. If students don't turn in their work after a certain point, they are counted as absent. In my district the impact of these new policies can be measured by the fortitude of school leaders to stick to their guns in the face of pushback from parents and students.
