6.1 Continuous Learning
Candidates demonstrate continual growth in knowledge and skills of current and emerging technologies and apply them to improve personal productivity and professional practice. (PSC 6.1/ISTE 6a, 6b)
Artifact: Literature Review
Reflection:
The artifact I've chosen to demonstrate mastery of standard 6.1 is a literature review I wrote for ITEC 7470 Educational Research. The title of the paper is Interactive Whiteboards in the Classroom: What can they do? What should they do? What are they doing?
Instructional technology coaches should stay informed about issues related to classroom technology use. I work in a school district that has interactive white boards in every classroom. I knew I used the Whiteboard. But I didn't know how others used it. This is one of the main reasons I chose this topic to study. The process of completing this literature review demonstrates my ability to continually grow my skillset and knowledge base related to current and emerging technologies. I acquired a broad knowledge base of all things related to Interactive White Boards in the field of education. I also learned how to conduct and produce scholarly research. I am able to apply this knowledge and skill to improve my own personal productivity and professional practice, and assist my colleagues to do the same.
After an initial review the literature about Interactive White Boards in the classroom, I sought answers to the following questions: 1) What are the most effective uses of IWBs for classroom teachers? 2) Do IWB’s improve student performance? Surprisingly, I learned that the link between IWBs and improvements in student performance is very weak. Research indicates that teachers tend to underutilize these devices, which may explain why their contribution to student performance is negligible.
The completion of this mini literature review has given me the scholarly research skills I will need to inform best practices in many areas related to instructional technology. This new knowledge will impact school improvement since I now know the best ways to integrate IWBs into classrooms to enhance student learning, which I will be able to share with my colleagues. As teachers learn the most effective ways to integrate the technology, student engagement will increase which will eventually improve student learning.
