2.6 Instructional Design
Candidates model and facilitate the effective use of research-based best practices in instructional design when designing and developing digital tools, resources, and technology-enhanced learning experiences. (PSC 2.6/ISTE 2f)
Artifact: ITEC 7481 Online Learning Experience
Reflection:
This artifact was created during ITEC 7481, Designing Online Learning. To complete this assignment I developed six week unit of study to be implemented in a sixth grade social studies class. I documented this unit by taking screenshots of my district's Learning Management System, into which I had added the content.
I believe this course work template demonstrates mastery of the standard because it gave me the ability to model and facilitate the effective use of research-based best practices in instructional design. The unit I created is standards based, assesses the current needs of the learners, contains numerous forms of assessment, provides accommodations to meet the needs of different learning styles, incorporates the principals of universal design, provides a means of differentiation and extension for students who need it, and defines an end goal of the instruction through the use of learning outcomes.
I learned a lot through the creation of this Online Learning Experience. Besides becoming much more adept at utilizing the many features of my district's learning management system (this was where I housed my product) I also learned how to proactively lead online classrooms. I learned how to create an effective syllabus which set clear expectations about all aspects of the course. I learned how to develop and deliver assessments, projects, and assignments in a virtual environment. And I learned how to select and implement assignments and assessments which were authentic, relevant to the content, specifically designed for a digital environment. If I had to do the project over again, I would have created the unit on a platform that was not password protected - perhaps a site like Wikispaces, Weebly, Haiku, Canvas, or perhaps even Google Hangout. This would have made showing my learning to my professor much easier.
Creating this lesson taught me how to move instruction from a traditional delivery system toward a more online environment. This is a trend in my district and, I predict will continue across the country. The knowledge I've gained in this process will enable me to be a leader in online/blended learning. Plus, I've shared much of the online unit I created in my District LMS which will impact faculty development and school improvement in that more resources are available for my fellow social studies teachers.
