In ITEC 7470 Educational Research we were introduced to scholarly research. We learned about the two main types of research, Quantitative and Qualitative, as well as mixed methods and action research. The primary means of delivery for this information were textbook readings and video lectures. All elements of the research paper were described in detail, and students were quizzed on the materials at regular intervals. We were also required to dissect three articles assigned by the professor, and complete our own scholarly mini lit review of our own topic related to instructional technology.
I have acquired a thorough understanding of research methodology and will be better informed when reading research in the future and when conducting my own research. I now understand the research process which should assist me in my role as a leader and coach to utilize research to solve classroom and school wide problems. Should my career path require me to conduct research, ITEC 7470 also raised my awareness level of ethical concerns in conducting research.
I would characterize the content and delivery of ITEC 7470 as meta-learning approach where we learned the mechanics of scholarly research, but we also learned about many issues in education through required reading, research, and writing. I'll remember the articles and the lit review more for their content. As a side benefit, I learned how to be a consumer and producer of scholarly research.
