I’ve created screencasts for students
· as a showcase for student work. This year it was a screencast titled “Top 5 Latin America Cookie Cakes” which I embedded on my LMS page.
· as a tutorial on Wikispaces describing how to access and use the many features offered in their wiki, also embedded on my LMS page.
Although I’ve never asked my students to create a screencast, I can visualize its potential use as an alternative to a live presentation which often accompanies student projects. The voice recording element of a screencast would require students to put more thought into their delivery than if they were standing in front of the room speaking off-the-cuff. Screencasting could also serve as a delivery method for shy kids who are frightened at the prospect of standing before a live audience to deliver their presentation.
I wanted to find information about how teachers were incorporating screencasting into their classrooms, so I visited www.classroom20.com. A search for “screencasting” in both the Forum and in Groups shows that, by and large, screencasts are being used as tutorials created by teachers for their students. In terms of enhancing learning, student creation of screencasts seems to be a bit of a thought experiment.
Here’s a screencast I created with screencast-o-matic.com.
